DIRECTOR ROB REINER, WIFE STABBED DEAD: "TROUBLED" SON BEHIND BARS

The shooter in the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Wednesday has been arrested after being turned in by family members, according to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox.

"We got him," Cox said. "On the evening of Sept. 11, a family member of Tyler Robinson reached out to a family friend who contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office with information that Robinson had confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident."

Tyler Robinson, 22, of Utah, was identified by Cox as the suspect and stated that investigators interviewed a family member who said the suspect had become more political in recent years.

President Trump announced on Friday that a suspect was in custody for the killing of far-right activist Charlie Kirk. Although the motive has not yet been established, Trump has escalated his attacks on the political left, saying, "We just have to beat the hell out of them." Democracy Now! speaks with Mehdi Hasan, editor-in-chief and CEO of Zeteo, who says that the right is using Kirk's killing to smear the left. 

"There's a real rewriting of history going on. It's what far-right regimes do after tragedies like this: They try and weaponize them to go after their enemies," says Hasan. "None of us should celebrate political violence, because it's a threat to all of us," he adds.

Much of Trump's political base is in an uproar after federal officials declined to release government files about Epstein and his serial sexual abuse of women and girls, with Trump himself reportedly named in the documents. 

"They were friends. They hung out with each other," Ward says of Trump and Epstein. 

Ward was among the first journalists to investigate Epstein when she profiled him for _Vanity Fair_ in 2003. The magazine's editor at the time, Graydon Carter, cut out the testimonies of two young women who had spoken on the record about Epstein's abuse. Ward's podcast and TV series of the same name is Chasing Ghislaine: The Untold Story of the Woman in Epstein's Shadow, focusing on Ghislaine Maxwell's role as a facilitator for Epstein's crimes.
